A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience
The 2016 Summer Olympics (French: Les Jeux olympiques d’été de 2016) (Portuguese: Jogos Olímpicos de Verão de 2016), officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad and as Rio 2016, is a major international multi-sport event due to be celebrated in the tradition of the Olympic Games, as governed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The host city of the Games will be Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, announced at the 121st IOC Session held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on October 2, 2009. They are scheduled to be held from August 5 to 21, 2016.

There will be 35 competition venues mainly in Barra da Tijuca, but also in three other zones: Copacabana, Deodoro, and Maracanã. It will be the first time a South American city will host the event.

Rio 2016 launches volunteer programme
The Rio 2016 Organising Committee has launched the application process for the volunteer programme that will operate during the 2016 Olympic Games.
The organisers are looking for 70,000 people – from all over the world – to work in a wide variety of roles during the Games, including interpreters, receptionists, drivers, reporters and medical professionals, as well as general volunteers who will provide services such as assisting spectators at the Olympic venues.

“The volunteers are indispensable for the success of the Games, they are the soul of the event,” said Flávia Fontes, head of the Rio 2016 Volunteers Programme. “A person in the city could go through the Games without seeing an athlete with their own eyes, but it would be impossible not to meet a volunteer. They play a part in everything, helping and providing information to spectators, assisting heads of state and providing operational support at the ceremonies.”

The first stage of the selection process will begin with online registration at www.rio2016.com, which opens today, followed by aptitude testing and interviews.

To take part, applicants must be at least 18 years old in May 2016; have completed basic education; and be available during both the training process and the 2016 Games, which run from 5-21 August 2016.
